NALITABARI, SHERPUR, Apr 5: Some 10,000 people of about eight villages in Nalitabari Upazila of the district are facing communication problems because of a broken bridge.

This bridge linked Sherpur Sadar Upazila and Nalitabari Upazila. The bridge is beside the home of Union Member Monchher Ali of Kawapenchi Village at Gazirkhamar Union. It was built over a canal.

According to field sources, the 60-foot bridge was constructed in 2017 to reduce communication suffering of people of Kolospar area in the upazila. But within two years, the bridge collapsed into the canal; so people of both banks of the canal fell into trouble.

Later on, locals made a bamboo pathway at their own cost.

There are    Eidgah Math, one Noorani Madrasa, and one government primary school on the west bank of the canal. In the east bank, there are one Jam-e-Mosque, one government primary school, one community clinic and one village haat.

Hundreds of people of Pachiwm Kolosparh, Haatkhola, and Sutarbari in Nalitabari Upazila, and Sherpur Sadars Kuraliakanda, Bazarkanda, Khorkhoria, Natughosh, and Baniapara villages use the bridge.

Locals said, the bridge has been lying broken for the last two and a half  years; daily communication of people is hampered; patient taking to hospital is delayed; farmers are also facing problems in bringing their agri-items to market.

They demanded a new bridge construction soon to reduce public sufferings.

A dweller of Kawapenchi Village Mamun said, "We have raised the bamboo pathway at our own cost. It needs to construct a bridge on an emergency basis."

A student of the area Saidul Islam said, "We are facing many problems for not building a new bridge here. Students pass the bridge in scare."

Gazirkhamar Union Chairman Awladul Islam said, "I have inspected the bridge. This bridge was built from relief allocation. I have informed the authorities concerned about building a new bridge."

Upazila Project Implementation Officer Abdul Hannan said, after inspection of the bridge, necessary measures will be taken.
