Over 100 senior citizens, widows deprived of allowances at Chilmari

CHILMARI, KURIGRAM, Apr 7: More than 100 old people and widows didn get allowance properly in Chilmari Upazila of the district.
Many of them didn get allowance of first three months in respective mobile accounts.
Some victim senior citizens, who have got one months allowance instead of three months, were seen sitting in front of the Social Services Welfare office. Due to negligence of the official concerned, they did not get their allowances, they alleged.
According to sources, under the social safety net of Social Services Department, about 16,000 beneficiaries including old people, widows, disabled people and Horizons are getting allowances.
Allowances include Tk 600 as monthly old allowance, Tk 550 as widow allowance, and Tk 850 as disabled allowance. These allowances are sent to their mobile bKash accounts.
According to rules, on the basis of three-monthly allowances, Upazila Social Services Officer sends pay-roll of the beneficiaries. Then via the Finance Ministry, allowances are sent to the bKash accounts of the beneficiaries.
Allowances of first three months (Jan-Mar) were released by the Social Services office. But it was alleged, due to duty negligence of Upazila Social Services Officer (Additional Charge) Md Nazmul Hasan, many got only one months allowance. Many others complained of not getting messages.
Victim senior citizens said, they will be deprived of Eid celebration.
In a recent visit, they were seen sitting in front of the Social Services office for their allowances.
Rupban Bewa, Milikjan Bewa, Anwara, Rokeya, Parul and many others of Datiarchar area at Ashtamirchar Union in the upazila said, they are not getting allowances for a long time.
Mozammel Haq and several others said, they got one months allowance of Tk 600 each instead of Tk 1,800 for three months.
They complained, since the joining of the present in-charge officer of the Social Services office, irregularities are taking place in providing allowances.
After failing to get the Social Services officer, victim citizens went to the upazila chairman. After talking with the Social Services officer, the upazila chairman asked them to go home.
Social Services Officer Md Nazmul Hasan said, the allowances of January-March have been released; but all money will not come at a time; all will get allowances in phases.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Minhajul Islam said, "After being informed of the matter, I have talked with the Social Services officer. Measures will be taken soon to solve the problem."
