At least five people have been killed after a rope of a launch broke into pieces and hit them at Sadarghat Launch Terminal in the capital.

The incident happened around 3:00 pm on Thursday.

The identity of deceased could not be known immediately, however, two of them were a woman and a child.

Ashik Sayeed, superintendent of River Police (Crime and Operation), confirmed the matter.

He said a launch, MV Farhan, struck another one named MV Tasrif-4 while attempting to anchor alongside the latter in the terminal.

At that time, the rope of Tasrif severed and hit some of the people around, leaving five people critically injured.

The were rescued and rushed to Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared them dead.

Legal action would be taken against responsible people after investigation, SP Ashik added.
