State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu said permanent stores would be built to ensure sale and supply of TCB products and the government is also planning to set up warehouses at divisional level to maintain buffer stocks.
TCB usually supplies four to five products together. But many times it happens that if one product is late in arriving, District Commissioner (DC) hold back distribution of the rest of the products on the ground that they will give all products together.
He said if the government build fixed store at different locations, TCB will start selling goods when products will reach stores without wailing for all to be available to go for distribution.
Titu made the disclosure at a meet the reporters event organized by Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Tuesday. DRU general secretary Mohiuddin moderated the event while its president Syed Shukur Ali Shubo presided over it.
He said sometimes supply chain disruption suffers a permanent stores may offer a solution. He said TCB was started to ensure supply of goods and services on an emergency basis not on a permanent basis.
Now we are working to give a permanent structure. We have no warehouse but any product needs to have buffer stock to maintain uninterrupted supply. He said, "We need warehouse to maintain buffer stock. We have built a new warehouse of 40 thousand square feet in Chittagong. Having built warehouses in various divisional cities, we will create buffer stock as soon as possible.
The State Minister said, TCB has to buy and sell products and absence of buffer stock or godown facilities at different locations which make TCB operations irregular. We must have warehouse to maintain buffer stocks and TCB must have such facility at least at Divisional level.
He said "neither TCB has storage facility nor its dealers have their own stores to keep products for 15 days or one month. Due to this delivery of products gets delayed by 7 or 10 days."
Titu said, "We may collect good things and distribute them at fair price wherever it is available to the lower middle class, middle class and fixed income people through TCB. TCB products are for poor people. They don have the ability to buy at Tk 600 to 1000 per kg.
He said, "We are looking at another issue that is increasing exports through diversification of products. Despite all this, in the last three months, we have increased exports every month. Now we want to diversify into imports as well. We don want to depend on a place or country. We are communicating with many countries."
The Minister of State for Commerce said, "After 2026, there will be transition from least developed to developing countries (LDC). For this we will get various facilities for three years. He said the next five years will be challenging one. At the same time, we will not get the benefits that we get as LDCs. Thats why we have to prepare now.
