RANGAMATI, Apr 20: All types of fishing activities will remain banned in Kaptai Lake in the district for next three months (Apr 25-July 24).
The ban will be effective from April 25 midnight (12am).
According to official sources, the ban has been imposed by the district administration for facilitating fish breeding of carp species.
During the ban time, ice mills will remain suspended.
At a meeting on Thursday (Apr 18) noon, held in the deputy commissioner (DC) office, the ban was announced by the DC.
Among others, Additional District Magistrate Jobaida Aktar, BFDC-Rangamati Manager Commander Md Ashraful Alam Bhuiyan, District Fisheries Officer Adhir Das, navy police representatives and fish traders were present at the meeting.
DC Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Khan said, during the ban time, fishermen dependent on fishing in the lake will be given food assistance through VGF cards.
To stop illegal fishing, transporting and marketing, mobile court will be conducted in addition to deploying navy police in important places, he added. Legal action will be taken against illegal fishers, the DC maintained.
BFDC Managing Commander Md Ashraful Alam Bhuiyan said, usually the ban is imposed from May 1 to July 31.
