US veto dashes Palestinians’ hopes to become UN member

Disregarding global opinions, the United States has denied the Palestinians their genuine right to become the 194th full-fledged member of the United Nations. This move has not only dashed hopes of Palestinians but also thrown the entire Middle East peace process into jeopardy, drawing worldwide condemnations.

Although the Palestinians are currently a non-member observer state, a de facto recognition of statehood that was granted by the UN General Assembly in 2012, the latest US stance is considered a serious blow to the implementation  of the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This is why the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the failure to make progress towards a two-state solution will only increase volatility and risk for hundreds of millions of people across the region.

Describing the US veto as unfair, unethical and unjustified, the office of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said its a blatant aggression which pushes the entire Middle East ever further to the edge of the abyss.

The US has exercised its veto power on Friday effectively blocking the UN from recognising a Palestinian state during the Security Council resolution, citing a flimsy excuse that an independent Palestinian state should be established through direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

The only UNSC member, the US, vetoed the draft resolution in the UN General Assembly with Britain and Switzerland abstaining while the remaining other 12 Council members voted yes.

The US has once again shown its true colors by letting the Israel to get away with genocide being committed in Palestinian territories. It has condoned or supported all kinds of Israeli apocalyptic destruction mainly in the Gaza Strip and other parts of the Palestinian state, playing a ruse like both an arsonist and a firefighter.

But the innocent Palestinians have been paying a heavy price in a war between the militant group, Hamas, and Israeli forces since October 7, with death toll on the Palestinian side surging past 34,000 until Saturday morning.

US double standards is evident when on the one hand Israelis have been supplied with modern projectiles and advanced military equipment by the current Biden administration while it is advocating peace and deterrence in the regions military escalation.

But an aura of warfare has been prevailing in the entire Middle East when Iran has been provoked by the Israelis to get involved in the conflicts after the formers consulate came under Israeli air attacks on April 1 in Damascus, killing at least 14 people, including a senior commander in the Al-Quds force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps.

This is high time the US understood the reality that the two-state policy is the only solution to the on-going Palestinian-Israeli war and if it is not executed, the conflict will stretch across the entire Middle East. We are left hoping that the US administration will adopt evenhanded approach to the region with exerting its influence on Israel towards a lasting peace for all.
