CUET still tense over death of two students, bus driver arrested

Students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) continued their demonstration for the third consecutive day on Wednesday by blocking the Chattogram-Kaptai road in protest of the death of two students in a road accident.

The students took to the street boycotting classes and examinations and blocked road by setting fire on logs and tyres to press home their 10-point demand for safe road.

The students held a press conference on Wednesday afternoon in this regard. They said the bus owners' association wanted to pay Tk 2 lakh to each of the deceased's family and Tk 1 lakh to the family of injured student. 

The agitated student declined the offer hatefully and demanded Th 2 crore for each of the deceased’s family.

They also claimed that the drivers of the buses Shah Amanat Paribahan ply their vehicles recklessly. The accident occurred while the bus tried to overtake the motorcycle.  
Meanwhile, police arrested the driver of the bus that ran over two students of the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), from the Kotwali area of Chattogram city on Wednesday.

Md Tazul Islam, 49, son of Abdul Khalil of Chikdair area of Raozan Upazila in Chattogram, was the driver of the bus of 'Shah Amanat Paribahan'.

Chattogram district additional superintendent of (district special branch) Abu Tayeb Mohammad Arif Hossain said police arrested the driver Tazul from Kotwali area of the city on Wednesday.

On April 22, a bus ran over a motorcycle at near Selina Quader Chowdhury College on Chattogram-Kaptai Road under Rangunia Police Station in Chattogram at around 3.30pm, leaving three students of the CUET injured.
Later, Shanto Saha, a student of the 20th batch of Civil Engineering Department, and Toufiq Hossain, of the same department, died.

Another student who injured in the accident is Zakaria Himu, a student of the same department of CUET. He is now undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Chattogram.

His leg was broken in the accident. Doctors said he is out of danger.

After the incident, the driver and the helper of the bus went into hiding.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday a seven-member probe committee headed by additional district magistrate of Chattogram has been formed to investigate the incident and the committee has been asked to submit report in seven working days.
