Giving hints of taking strict disciplinary action, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday expressed hope that the relatives of Awami League ministers and lawmakers who are set to contest in the initial phase of the upcoming upazila parishad elections violating party directives, will pull out of the race before it is too late.

"Several relatives of AL lawmakers are set to contest in the initial phase of the upcoming upazila council elections violating the partys directives. I am hopeful that they will pull out of the race before it is too late. Otherwise, strict disciplinary action would be taken against them from the party," Quader, also Road Transport and Bridges Minister, said while addressing a press conference at the Awami League Presidents Dhanmondi office on Wednesday.

He said, "Even though the deadline for withdrawing candidacies, as set by the Election Commission, had passed, there was still room for action as candidates could rescind their nominations right up until the day before the election."

Implying measures against the lawmakers disobeying the partys decision, the Minister said, "We have provisions for disciplinary action in our party. We made some decisions before the national parliament election."

In the last national election, many incumbent AL MPs had not received the partys endorsement, and some ministers had been dropped from the Cabinet, he said. "So our party makes proper and timely decisions."

According to Quader, some of the candidates said if they had been informed about the matter earlier it would have been easier for them to make a decision. Some have withdrawn, some have not. Even if the official deadline for withdrawal has passed you can still withdraw if you wish.

"Disciplinary action will be taken this time also if party instructions are disobeyed. The decision will be taken in due time," he added.
