Mohammedan Sporting Club beat Prime Bank Cricket Club by 33 runs in a high-scoring game of the super league phase of Dhaka Premier League (DPL) after the Prime Bank batter Mushfiqur Rahim was given out dubiously at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Thursday.
Put into bat first, Mohammedan compiled a hefty 317-6, riding on a 131 ball-141 of opener Rony Talukdar before bowling out Prime Bank for 284 in 48.5 overs for their second straight victory in super league.
But the victory was marred by veteran Mushfiqur Rahims dismissal as he was given out controversially after making 10.
During the 33.4 over of Prime Bank innings when Mushfiqurs lofted shot against off spinner Nayeem Hasan was caught at deep mid-wicket by Abu Haider Rony, who made a terrific effort to hold on to it. However, replays showed that Ronys leg had touched the boundary ropes which clearly moved after the contact.
Prime Bank raised concerns over the on-field umpires decision but with no TV replays and third umpire unavailable in DPL games, the umpires stuck to their decision.
Match referee Roquibul Hasan later said since it is not a televised game, the umpires have to depend on the honesty of the fielders.
However apart from Rony who smacked eight fours and nine sixes in his big knock, wicket-keeper batter Mahidul Islam Ankan hit 50 while Mehidy Hasan Miraz was not out after hammering 29 ball-53 with seven fours and one six.
For Prime Bank, Mahedi Hasan struck 64 off 45 while Sunzamul Isalm made a fluent 49 off 35 to help the side come closer to the victory but eventually couldn snatch the victory. Shahadat Hossain Dipu was the other notable scorer with 51.
Abu Haider Rony, Mushfik Hasan and Nasum Ahmed took two wickets apiece for Mohammedan.
Meanwhile Fazle Mahmud Rabbi hit 101 not out as Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club recorded its first victory in the DPL super league, having beaten Shinepukur Cricket Club by seven wickets at BKSP-3 ground.
Opting to bat first, Shinepurkur were wrapped up for 264 in 46.1 overs, a total that Sheikh Jamal hunted down in 46.2 overs. —BSS
