BAUPHAL, PATUAKHALI, Apr 26: Suddenly diarrhoea patients have increased in Bauphal Upazila of the district.

The upazila health complex is facing pressure of patients than the capacity of the hospital.

At the same time, crises of saline and bed are prevailing in the hospital.  Due to bed crisis, patients are being treated on the floor.

According to hospital sources, one diarrhoea patient Rina, 7, died on Monday night.

This information was confirmed by Dr Mirajul Islam, on-duty physician of the Emergency Department. The baby was affected three days back and was taken to the hospital after her death, he added.

She was daughter of Rahim Gazi of Majpara Village at Madanpura Union in the upazila.

In the last one month, 385 patients were admitted to the hospital; in the last week, 96 ones were admitted; and in the last 24 hours, 15 patients were admitted.

Over the last week, more than 150 patients received treatment in Outdoor and Emergency department; of them, over 70 per cent were children and adults.

Doctors said, due to bed crisis, many patients are not going to the hospital; they are taking treatment from different health centres and doctors. Their number will be more than 1,000.

A visit on Tuesday noon found patients including children and women  on the floor of second storey of the hospital.

A mother from Chandradwip Marium Begum, 26, said, her 2.5-year-old baby was suffering loose motion  from Monday; on Tuesday noon, the baby was taken to hospital; and the patient was given saline. But due to lack of space, she was standing with her baby.

A relative of a patient  Samir Shil said, his patient has been accommodated on floor; there are dirt and waste around; foul smell is spreading.

At present, because of saline crisis, patients are purchasing saline from the outside.

It was alleged, they have to buy saline at higher prices. Per piece is selling at Tk 130-150 against the price of Tk 100.

Only one/two saline bags are provided from the hospital, and extra ones are purchased from the outside, relatives complained.

Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Prashanta Kumar Saha confirmed the saline crisis to journalists.

"I have personally given 200 bags of saline. Treatment is going on with these. Another order of 200 bags has been made. I have informed the saline crisis to the authorities concerned. They will take measures to solve the crisis," he added.
