A 65-year-old man was shot dead in police firing during a clash at a polling centre in Birol upazila of Dinajpur centering vote counting on Sunday night.

The deceased was Mohammad Ali, 65. He was the uncle of winner member Jobaidur Rahman.
The incident happened around 8:30pm on Sunday at Singul Hamid-Hamida High School where the results for the union parishad polls were announced.

Deputy commissioner Shakil Ahmed said police and BGB members are on the spot to avert any untoward situation.

A three-member committee, led by additional district magistrate Jane Alam, has been formed to investigate the incident. It has been asked to submit a report within three working days.

Local people said that supporters of UP chairman candidates Saiful Islam and Jobaidur Rahman were chasing each other after votes were counted.

When police tried to control the situation, the supporters started throwing brick chunks at officers who then used firearms.

Mohammad Ali was taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.
