An activist of Bangladesh Chhatra Leagues Dhaka University (DU) unit on Wednesday night allegedly warned two first year students of dire consequences as the students failed to attend political programmes.
The alleged worker is universitys second-year student Julkar Nayen Mahin, also a member of the group controlled by BCLs Bijoy 71 Hall chapter Joint General Secretary Ahmed Faisal, Organizing Secretary Shakirul Islam Shakib and Mass Communication and Development Affairs Deputy Secretary Sakibul Sujan. All of them are known as followers of BCL DU branch General Secretary Tanbir Hasan Shaikat.
A screenshot received from the members of an internal group of Mahin showed that he mentioned two students named Amzad Meaji and Iftakharul Huda Mazumder, and wrote, "We will not take your responsibility from today. Since you are not involved in BCL activities, you are considered as Shibir activists. After today, if we see you in the hall, the consequences will be dire." A student of the group, wishing not be named, said that the first-year students were asked at around 11:15pm on Wednesday to be present at BCLs Mini Guest Room, where they reportedly set up trials of the junior students, within 15 minutes.
"Many were busy at that time and could not attend the Mini Guest Room. Julkar Nayen Mahin and Kaushik Hasan Parash bhai instructed BCL activists to throw out the trunks of our batchmates Riaz Uddin and Rahad for not participating in the political programme. The trunks contained important documents and certificates. Besides, Mahin bhai and Parash bhai ordered Amjad Meaji and Iftekharul Huda Mazumder to leave the hall, tagging them as Shibir workers," he said.
Julkar Nayen Mahin is reported to have told journalists that his aim was to scare them so I branded them as Shibir activists. I confess I have committed an error and shall never make such a mistake. Unlike today, Bijoy 71 Hall Provost Prof Abdul Bashir was often found unreachable on several occasion of other incidents that took place in his hall. Talking to this correspondent, Proctor Prof M Maksudur Rahman said he should not comment on the matter as it was an internal issue of Bijoy 71 Hall. "None has filed any complaint with me in this regard," he said.
