Fugitive Juba League leader convicted in drug case surrenders

A Dhaka court sent Nazmul Hasan, a Juba League leader, who hiring a person to serve out his jail term in exchange for money, to jail on Monday.

Nazmul was sentenced to seven years imprisonment by a Dhaka Court in a narcotic case, following this verdict, another person named Mirazul Islam assuming the identity of Nazmul and languishing in jail.

As per the High Courts directive, the fugitive convict Juba League leader, Nazmul Hasan, surrendered before the trial court on Monday and applied for bail in the court of Dhakas Eighth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Aminul Islam.  After the hearing, the court denied bail and ordered him to be sent to jail.

On Sunday, the High Court asked the fugitive Juba League leader Nazmul to surrender to the trial court by within 24 hours of the order.

The bench of Justice Md Ashraful Kamal issued the directive to Nazmul Hasan, a leader of Uttara Paschim Juba League unit, after he denied through an affidavit to the court that he was unaware of the jail term in a narcotic case on July 4 in 2023, as he was staying abroad.

Nazmul also denied a reported allegation that Mirajul Islam, a 23-year-old from Phulpur in Mymensingh, surrendered to the 8th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court of Dhaka on August 9, 2023, impersonating Nazmul following an underhand negotiation and spent 16 days in jail before he was freed on bail on August 20, 2023.
