Two killed as truck overturns in Satkhira

Two paddy harvesting workers were killed and seven others injured as a paddy-laden truck overturned into a roadside ditch at Tala upazila in Satkhira district on Saturday morning.

The accident took place around 6.30am on the Khulna-Paikgacha highway at Harischendrakathi Sardar Bari Bottala area under the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Saidul Gazi, 44, son of Taleb Gazi, a resident of Boga village, and Monirul Islam, 25, son of Tofazzal Sardar, a resident of Mandarbaria village in Khulna's Koyra upazila.
Confirming the matter, Tala Police Station officer-in-charge Md Monirul Islam said the accident occurred when the truck carrying 13 paddy field workers, who were on the way to harvest paddy in Gopalganj from Koyra upazila, overturned as the driver lost control over the vehicle, leaving two dead on the spot and seven others critically injured.

Zahidul Islam, one of the workers, said they got 20-25 maund of paddy as wage during the harvesting period and that’s why they went for work.

They also blamed the undergoing road expansion work behind the accident.
