Lightning strikes claim seven lives in 3 districts


Seven people were killed by lightning strikes in Narsingdi, Tangail and Gazipur on Saturday morning.

In Narsinghdi: Four people, including a woman and her son, died and another person injured after lightning strikes in different locations in Narsingdi.

The dead were Sufia Begum, 35, and her son Emon Mia, 10, from Alokbali village; Day labourers  Quayyum Mia, 20, from Raipura’s Baghaikandi; and Mosleh Uddin, 55, from the Hajipur area. Sufia Begum’s husband, Kamal Mia, was injured in the incident.

Narsingdi Sadar Police Station OC Tanvir Ahmed said the incidents occurred in the Sadar Upazila’s Alokbali and Shahartali’s Hajipur areas on Saturday morning.
According to locals, a streak of lightning struck them while the trio along with others were harvesting paddy amid a heavy rainfall, leaving them critically injured.

Locals rescued them and took to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital where the physicians declared them dead.

Mosleh Uddin was killed in a lightning strike around the same time in Hajipur.

The bodies of all four victims are currently at the hospital morgue.

In Tangail: Two paddy harvesting workers were killed and four others injured after being struck by lightning strike at Kalihati upazila in Tangail district on Saturday morning.

The incident took place around 9am at Nuabari village under Birbashinda union of the upazila.
The deceased were Afzal Hossain, and his cousin Md Amir Hossain, both were hailed from Dinajpur's Pirganj upazila.

According to witnesses, a streak of thunderbolt struck the duo when they along with others were working in a paddy field, leaving them dead on the spot and four others critically injured.

Sohrab Hossain, chairman of Birbashinda Union Parishad, confirmed the information.

In Gazipur:  A woman named Fatema Khatun, 45in Sreepur upazila was killed after being struck by lightning.

Sub-Inspector Quddus Mia of Sreepur Police Station said the incident occurred around 10am when Fatema was doing household chores in the yard.

She was then taken to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared her dead, the SI added.
