7 to die for killing trader in Cumilla

A Cumilla court on Sunday sentenced seven people to death in the murder case of a businessman at Homna in the district.

Seven other accused were sentenced to life imprisonment in the same case. In addition, the court also fined them Tk 50,000 each.
Cumilla Additional District and Sessions Fourth Court Judge Md Jahangir Hossain announced the verdict in the afternoon.

According to the case statement, on July 28, 2015, due to a dispute over owed money, the convicts called Sadek Mia, a businessman of Chhota Ganiarchar area of the upazila, and threw him in a cropland after cutting his leg. Later, his relatives rescued him and took to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died on the next day while undergoing treatment.

In the incident, Sadek Mia's wife Rekha Akter filed a murder case against 18 people with Homna Police Station. The investigating officer accused 15 people and filed a charge sheet to the court.

After hearing the testimony of 20 witnesses, the court sentenced the seven to death and seven to life imprisonment in the case. One person has been acquitted in the case.
