Voters may be more enthusiastic in 2nd phase of upazila polls: Alamgir

Election Commissioner Md Alamgir said on Sunday, "Voters may be more enthusiastic in the second phase of the Upazila Parishad election tomorrow because the first phase, like the general election, was free and fair."

Voting will be held in 157 Upazilas on Tuesday in the second phase of the local government election.
Alamgir told reporters, "But it is hard to tell exactly how high the turnout will be. If the weather is good, if law and order is maintained, if the situation is peaceful, then more voters will  turnout to cast votes."

He said that voter turnout was low as a major party like the BNP has been boycotting polls.

Alamgir said, "I am hopeful that the second phase of the elections will be fair and peaceful. The local administration and police are alert to ensure that there are no issues."

Authorities will ensure that voters will be able to cast vote without any interference for their preferred candidates, he said.

A good number of candidates are taking part in the polls, he said.

Alamgi said, "We held peaceful and fair general election on January  7 and peaceful and fair Upazila polls on May 8."

"Voters have nothing to fear. They should come to  polling centres and cast votes for the candidates they want," he said.

The turnout in the first phase of Upazila election  was 36 per cent.

Alamgir said, "A major cause for low turnout was BNPs boycott of election, but it wasn the only factory.

Another reason is that voters don want to leave work to cast votes in local elections. Now, more than 60 per cent don want to come. It happens all over the world. Even when all the parties compete, the turnout in India is less than 60 per cent."
