When Mohammedan Sporting Club and Bashundhara Kings are set to meet in the final of the Federation Cup in Mymensingh at 3:00 pm today (Wednesday), the football fans are calculating the possibilities of Mohammedan Sporting Club winning its 12th Federation Cup title and Bashundhara Kings securing the third title.

Defending champion Mohammedan Sporting Club played the tournament 36 times (including the current one) and became a finalist 17 times. On the contrary, two-time champion Bashundhara Kings played the Federation Cup six times and set to play the final for the fourth time.

Although the black and white battalion are in the final for the 17th time the team was able to play the final 15 times as the 1984 final between Mohammedan and Abahani was abandoned before even kicking off due to a riot in Dhaka.

That time a tiny disagreement between fans over a single football match was enough to spark a city-wide riot. Those days are no more. But Mohammedan, one of the famed Football pavilions of the country, has come to play the final and, naturally, it is a favourite topic to discuss among the local football fans.

Bashundhara Kings, a new powerhouse of local Football, has marked its place and done comparatively better in the last few years. The team is considered the big-budget team and one of the top rivals in the tournament.

The two teams had faced each other seven times in different tournaments. There, Bashundhara won four times and Mohammedan twice. One match was tied.

Only a few days ago and at the same venue, Mohammedan has digested a 1-2 defeat to Bashundhara in the Bangladesh Premier League. On 11 May, Riding on two goals of Brazilian striker Dorielton Gomes Nascimento, Bashundhara Kings won over Mohammedan at the Rafiq Uddin Bhuiyan Stadium in Mymensingh. The Brazilian duo, Dorielton and midfielder Miguel Ferreira did a tremendous job for the win.

Now, playing against the same opponent at the same venue may give them hope to repeat history and win the title. For the good old days, Mohammedan will also give its best and with another trophy.
