PEKUA, COXS BAZAR, May 23: A man was hacked to death by his neighbours due to a dispute over constructing a bridge in Pekua Upazila of the district on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident took place in Jarulbonia Segunbagicha area under Shilkhali Union of the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Qader, 40, son of Abdur Rashid, a resident of the aforesaid area.
The deceaseds father Abdur Rashid said that an argument erupted between Abdul Qader and some of locals when he tried to build a bamboo-made bridge above a canal on Tuesday afternoon. At one stage of the altercation, they attacked on Qader with sharp weapons. When the family members rushed there to protect Qader, the attackers hacked them also, leaving four members of the family critically injured.
The injured were then rescued and taken to Pekua Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Qader dead.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Coxs Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Sub-Inspector of Pekua Police Station Abdul Jalil confirmed the incident, adding that the law enforcers have detained two persons for questioning and legal action would be taken in this regard.
