No change in Bangladesh squad despite USA debacle

The deadline for changes to the World Cup squad ended on Saturday. Despite below-par performances against the USA, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) made no changes to the squad.

"Every team was given additional chances and accordingly, there was a chance until 11:59 pm on May 24 (GST)," Bangladeshs chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu told journalists at Mirpur on Saturday. "According to the protocol, I had discussions with the captain and the coach. We are keeping the existing squad and expecting good results in the World Cup."

Bangladesh conceded a five-wicket defeat against the USA in the series opener, followed by failing to chase 144 runs and eventually losing the match and series by six runs. Lipu blamed the bowlers for the first match defeat and the batters for the second. He expressed his disappointment with the teams performances as well.

"We didn expect the team to start the series in such a manner. But its the reality. Well have 12 more days after this series and we have to move past this result as soon as possible. They all know that if the team does well in the World Cup, this defeat will be a distant memory," he explained.

Regarding World Cup preparation, he stated, "The days well get for practice, including two warm-up matches, will be crucial. We will get sporting wickets. I do believe that they will regain confidence there despite having a strong opponent like India. But still, practicing at the World Cup venues is a positive aspect," remarked Lipu.

Among all the negative outcomes, Bangladesh received some good news as the vice-captain of the team and key paceman Taskin Ahmed is fully fit and available from the very first match of the World Cup.

"Another MRI of Taskin has been done. He has been bowling faster than we were expecting. Another test will be done on May 30 or 31 and he is expected to start bowling from June 1 though he will start training even before. We are expecting that he will start bowling with a full run-up from June 5," Lipu informed Taskins update.
