Severe cyclonic storm 'Remal' made landfall the Bangladesh coast at about 8:00pm on Sunday (May 26) with rain and strong stormy winds.

The eye of the cyclone is scheduled to start crossing the Bangladesh's Khepupara coast between 12:00 and 1:00am Monday after which the cyclone is expected to weaken.
The cyclone may move to the northern direction further and cross the coast within two hours.

Deputy Director Shamim Hasan Bhuiyan of the Cyclone Warning Centre of Bangladesh Meterological Department (BMD) said in a briefing on Sunday night.

Our Correspondent reports: Rain with gusty wind started lashing Satikhira as the periphery of Cyclone Remal hit the coast on Sunday evening

Its centre was expected to cross the coast at around 9pm, with the cyclone located 200km southwest of the coastal district as of the filing of the report, said Zulfikar Ali with the Satkhira weather office.

"Strong waves are crashing on embankments. Some parts have collapsed and water is entering the surrounding villages. The cyclone is coming towards the coast at a speed of 8-10kmph. Wind speed is 90-120kmph within 62km of the cyclone centre, as a result of which there is a risk tidal surge of up to 12 feet along the coast," the meteorologist said.

Earlier, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) asked Mongla and Payra ports to hoist great danger signal No. 10 as cyclonic storm 'Remal'.

The coastal districts -- Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, Barguna, Bhola, and Patuakhali were brought under great danger signal number 10.

Besides, the Chittagong and Cox's Bazar were asked to hoist great danger signal No. 9.
