Dhaka WASAs decision to hike water tariffs unfair

Dear Sir

I am writing to express my concern regarding the latest decision by the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) to raise the price of water for residential and commercial consumers by 10 percent, effective from July 1.

While I understand that adjustments may be necessary to accommodate inflation and maintain the quality of service provided, this frequent increase in water tariffs, marking the 16th time in 16 years since the current government came to power in 2009, raises significant questions about affordability and fairness.

The new prices, set at Tk 16.7 per unit for residential consumers and Tk 46.2 per unit for commercial consumers, will undoubtedly impact households and businesses already facing financial challenges, especially considering the economic strains exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic.

Additionally, the decision to apply the increased rates to unmetered holdings, deep tube wells, buildings under construction, and all types of water and sewage charges further burdens a wide range of consumers.

As a concerned citizen, I urge WASA and relevant authorities to reconsider this decision and explore alternative measures to manage costs while ensuring access to clean and affordable water for all residents of Dhaka.
