A former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) president and his associate were beat up by traders of Polashi bazar in the capital on Sunday night while collecting money.

The BCL men are Mehedi Hasan, former president of Dhaka University's Salimullah Muslim Hall and his associate Shahidul Islam.

Traders and witnesses said that the two BCL men were handed over to police after a good thrash as they allegedly used to collect money from the traders.
The incident happened at about 11am at Polashi bazar in the capital.

According to the eye witnesses, as the traders refused to give money on Sunday night, the former BCL leader Mehedi Hasan and his associate attacked two traders of the market with machete. The traders then resisted them and beat up them handing them over to police.

Palashi Dokan Malik Samity former general secretary Mahbubul Haque said, "When trader Nazrul Islam fled the scene, the attackers came to hack me with the machete. Traders then recued me, caught the duo, and gave them a good thrash."

He said that they were, later, taken by the police.

Asked about the matter, Dhaka University proctor Maksudur Rahman said that he heard the news of detaining a former student of the university by the traders at Palashi Bazar for extortion.

"As he is not a current student of the university, DU authorities have no responsibility in this matter," he said, adding that, the university authorities could not take any action against him.
