BAGERHAT, June 4: Forest guards arrested 12 fishermen along with fishing net and trawler from a river in Sundarban in the district on Sunday night.
On the second day of fishing ban (June 1-August 31), they were arrested from the Bhola River at Sharankhola Range in East Sundarban.
Arrested fishers are: Riaz Hawladar, 28, Sakib Mir, 23, Shamim Mir, 18, Tamim Khan, 18, Babul Gazi, 28, Lavlu Gazi, 30, Arif Talukdar, 23, Badal Khan, 45, Masum Sharif, 45, Ashraful Bayati, 23, Rejaul Gazi, 30, and Salam Hawladar, 40.
They are dwellers of Rajapur Village in Sharankhola Upazila. Their owner is Mahim Hawladar of the same village.
According to Department of Forest sources, while the fishing trawler was crossing the Bhola River, forest guards of the Sharankhola Forest Station, being informed, conducted a drive at night and arrested them.
The trawler was full of nets, fuel oil and others.
ACF of the Sharankhola Range Sheikh Mahbub Hasan on Monday morning said, three-month (June 1-August 31) fishing ban is going on in Sundarban; but ignoring the ban, they attempted to catch fishes secretly.
After filing cases against them according to forest act, they were sent to court, the ACF added.
