The hosts Bangladesh managed to stick the Australian mens national football team officially nicknamed the Socceroos in a 0-2 margin on Thursday in a Group-I match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers round 2 at the Bashundhara Kings Arena in Dhaka.

The match between 24th-ranked Australia and 184th-ranked Bangladesh was long predicted to be a one-sided match. However, the host boys outperformed their previous results. It was Bangladeshs ever best performance against the rival.

In the match, Bangladesh deployed a defensive formation in the match. The technique worked well till the 29th minute. Finally, Australia went ahead in the 29th minute following an own goal.

The second goal was scored by Australian striker Kusini Boja Yengi in the 63rd minute.

It was the fourth match between the teams since their first meeting in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in 2015. Bangladesh was always the underdog and ended up losing everything.

During the 2015 World Cup qualifiers, Bangladesh lost the matches by 0-5 and 0-4. The away match this time saw a 0-7 defeat last November in Melbourne.

An unexpected incident took place as a little boy entered the ground a few minutes before the long whistle. Although the security personnel quickly took the little boy outside the fans are fearing of a punishment by FIFA for the matter.

The six-time World Cup playing team did impressive in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Top dog Socceroos won all seven matches in the group and have 15 points in the collection. In response, Bangladesh had a single point only.

Earlier, the Australian boys landed in Dhaka on Tuesday to play the match. In the meantime, the team practised at the match venue on Wednesday.

However, the haughty Australia team player and coach became the talk of the day after refusing to show the courtesy to take a group photo with their counterparts after the official pre-match briefing on Wednesday.

It was not the first time the Australians did something like that. In 2015, the boys refused to play a World Cup Qualifier match against Bangladeshladesh in Dhaka. That time the governing body of World Football FIFA eventually forced the Socceroos to play the match in Dhaka.

Now, Bangladesh will play its last match of the group on 12 June against Lebanon. The match will be played at a neutral venue at Qatars Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan city.
