Five to die, 13 get life term in murder cases

Separate courts in recent times sentenced five people to death and 13 others to life-term imprisonment in different murder cases in six districts - Bogura, Faridpur, Joypurhat, Narayanganj, Narsingdi and Chattogram.
BOGURA: A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced three men to death and a woman to life-term imprisonment for killing an easy-bike driver over extramarital affair in Sariakandi Upazila in 2020.
Bogura Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Habiba Mandal handed down the verdict at around 4:30 pm in presence of all the convicts.
The court also sentenced the convicts Tk 50,000 each.
The condemned convicts who were awarded to death sentence are: Shiblu Fakir, 25, son of Chhafu Khan of Kutibari area; Shanto Mia, 25, son of late Sirajul Islam of Ramnagar area; and Nayeem, 26, son of Tariqul Mandal of Amtali Dakshin Para area in Sariakandi Upazila.  
The lifer is Mina Begum, 25, wife of deceased Ashiq Mia of Haatfulbari Madhyapara area in the upazila.
According to the prosecution, Mina had a longstanding feud with her husband Ashiq Mia, son of late Salauddin of Haatfulbari area, over her extramarital affair. At one stage, she along with her lover Shiblu Fakir planned to kill Ashiq. Following the plan, Shiblu Fakir and his two associates Nayeem and Shanto called Ashiq out of the house on October 2, 2020, and strangulated him to death. They then dumped the body into the Bangali River.
Later on, police recovered the body from the river the next day.
In this regard, the deceaseds elder brother Anis Uddin lodged a murder case with Sariakandi Police Station (PS) accusing four people.
After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court against the four.
Following this, the court pronounced the verdict on Tuesday afternoon after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.
Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Advocate Md Abdur Razzak Khan confirmed the matter.     
FARIDPUR: A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced a youth to death for killing an 11-year-old child after rape in Boalmari Upazila in 2022.
The convict was present on the dock while pronouncement of the verdict. Then he was sent to jail under police escort.
Faridpur District Woman and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Hafizur Rahman handed down the verdict at around 1:30 pm.
At the same time, the convict was given five years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 19(4) (Kha) of Woman and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000 and fined Tk 20,000, and also fined Tk 20,000 under Section 302.
The condemned convict is Rasel Sikder, 23, son of Monwar Sikder, a resident of Ichadanga Village under Boalmari PS in the district.
Court sources said the deceased child was Rasels cousin sister. She was a sixth grader of a nearby school. They were neighbours of each other.
In the evening of August 22, 2022, the child was asked to bring due Tk 150 from Rasels house. Rasel was alone in the house at that time. When the child went to Rasels home to bring the money, Rasel took her to a nearby bathroom and raped her there. Then being scared of spreading the incident of rape, Rasel murdered the child tying her hands and legs and strangulating her with her scarf.
Then being failed to find the child, her family started searching and announcing through mosques mike. Later on, they informed the police calling over 999. As Rasel tried to flee, he was detained tactfully. Then police recovered the childs body from the bathroom.
Being the plaintiff, the childs father Md Moktar Hossain filed a rape case and a post-rape murder case with Boalmari PS.
Arrested Rasel was then produced before the court and he made confessional statement under Section 164.
Sub-Inspector of Boalmari PS Md Azad Hossain submitted the charge-sheet to the court on April 30, 2023.
Following this, the tribunal pronounced the verdict on Tuesday noon after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.
PP of the court Swapan Kumar Pal said the state was satisfied over the verdict.
A justice would be established in the society through the verdict, the PP added.
JOYPURHAT: A court in the district on Monday sentenced 10 members of a family to life-term imprisonment for killing a farmer in Khetlal Upazila in 2011.
Md Nurul Islam, judge of Joypurhat 1st Additional District and Sessions Court, delivered the verdict at around 12 pm.
The court also fined the convict Tk 50,000 each, and in default, they will have to suffer two more years of rigorous imprisonment.
Two accused of the case were also acquitted by the court as the allegations brought against them were not proven.
The condemned convicts are: Sabdul, his wife Fatema Begum, and his sons Helal, Alam Hossain, Idris Ali and Rejaul Islam; and Alams wife Farjana Begum, Helals wife Lilifa Begum, and one Ziauls wife Futti Begum, and Helal Uddin. All of them are residents of Mahabbatpur Village under Khetlal Upazila.
According to the prosecution, the convicts attacked on Shamsul Islam on October 31, 2011, when he along with his father and brother went to cultivate a land in the area, which left him critically injured.
He was then rescued and taken to Joypurhat General Hospital first, and later, shifted to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Later on, the deceaseds wife Merina Begum filed a murder case with Khetlal PS accusing 12 people.
After investigation, police then submitted the charge-sheet to the court against the 12.
After hearing the witnesses and examining the case evidences, the court punished the ten and acquitted two accused on Monday noon.
Assistant PP of the court Khaza Shamsul Alam Bulbul confirmed the matter.
NARAYANGANJ: A court in the district on Sunday sentenced a youth to death for killing his wife over dowry in Rupganj Upazila in 2018.
Narayanganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Nazmul Haque Shyamol handed down the verdict at noon.
The condemned convict is Abdur Rahim, 28, a resident of Mailab area under Rupganj Upazila.
The court also fined him Tk 50,000.
Special PP of the court Md Rakibuddin Ahmed Rakib confirmed the matter.
According to the prosecution, Abdur Rahim got married with Fatema, 19, daughter of Mostofa Mia of Suriab area under the same upazila. After few months of the marriage, Abdur Rahim started demanding Tk 1 lakh as dowry, and as a sequel to it, he started torturing his wife. On November 5 in 2018, Abdur Rahim beat Fatema to death over the dowry money.
Later on, the deceaseds father filed a murder case with Rupganj PS accusing Abdur Rahim.
After hearing the witnesses and examining the case evidences, the court delivered the verdict in presence of the convict on Sunday noon.
NARSINGDI: A court in the district on Sunday sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment for killing a young woman after rape in 2022.
District and Sessions Court Judge ANM Elias delivered the verdict in presence of the convict Jahangir Alam, 35, hails from Pakundia in Kishoreganj District.
The court also fined the convict Tk 20,000, and in default, he has to suffer another more year in jail.
PP of the court Khandakar Halim confirmed the matter.
According to the prosecution, Jahangir Alam and the 25-year-old deceased were in a relationship. As the woman became pregnant, she had pressured Jahangir to marry her but he refused, which led to a dispute between the couple. On October 7, 2022, the woman died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment.
On October 10, 2022, the deceaseds brother Raju Mia filed a case with Palash PS accusing Jahangir of raping and murdering his      sister.
After hearing the witnesses and examining the case evidences, the court pronounced the verdict on Sunday.
CHATTOGRAM: A court in the district sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment for killing his wife over a family feud in 2014.
Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-5 Judge Nargis Akter pronounced the verdict.
The convict is Harunur Rashid, 30, a resident of Halishahar PS area.
The court also fined him Tk 20,000, and in default, he will have to suffer one more year in jail.
According to the prosecution, Harunur Rashid strangled his wife Anny Akter, 22, to death at his residence on December 8, 2014 for not fulfilling his dowry demand during their conjugal life of 45 days only. The couple got married on October 24 in 2014. On December 9, 2014, police recovered the body of Anny from his residence.
The deceaseds father Md Younus filed a murder case with Halishahor PS on the same day against four persons in this regard.
After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court against Harunur Rashid.
The court then framed charge against him on April 29 in 2019.
Following this, the court delivered the verdict after examining the case records and taking depositions of a total of 13 witnesses, out of 31, in presence of the convicted person.
