SATKHIRA, June 7: Bankra Bridge over the Morichchap River at Budhhata Union in Asashuni Upazila  of the district collapsed in January, 2022 during the excavation of the river.

But even after two years, the broken bridge was not removed. And there has been no new bridge construction initiative. Thousands of people in three upazilas of the district are suffering seriously.

Locals said, the Bankra Bridge was built by the Directorate of Disaster Management. But that road is now under the jurisdiction of the Directorate of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).

Due to lack of coordination between these two government organizations, it has not been possible to take alternative measures to remove the collapsed bridge. They are blaming each other.

The 60-foot bridge was constructed over the Morichchap River in the financial year 2016-17 in the Bankra area of Budhhata Union at about Tk 55 lakh.

The bridge suddenly collapsed in January 2022 during the excavation of the river.

Haradhan Chandra of Kamalkati Village in the upazila said, people of Sobhnali and Budhhata unions in the upazila, of Fingri Union of Sadar Upazila and of Champaful Union of Kaliganj Upazila use the bridge.

"We have to suffer a lot because of the collapsed bridge," he added. He demanded removing the broken bridge urgently.

Executive Engineer Md Kamruzzaman of LGED-Satkhira said, the bridge was built by the Directorate of Disaster Management; they are also supposed to remove it after collapse.

The Disaster Management Department has not removed the bridge, he added.

He further said, even they did not take any alternative measures for ensuring public movement; the matter has been reported to the authorities concerned; and further action will be taken if the order comes from them.

Asashuni Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Roni Alam Noor said, the upazila administration is making every effort to remove the bridge and build a new bridge there.

The site inspection and preliminary survey have been made by LGED.

UNO expressed hope, LGED will build a new bridge soon.
