NARSINGDI, June 7: A passenger of a Dhaka-bound train was punched to death in a clash over sitting on a window seat at Narsingdi Railway Station in the district town on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred on the Dhaka Mail Express train at around 7 am.
The deceased was identified Jhumar Kanti Baul, 42, a garments worker in Dhaka.
Confirming the matter, Narsingdi Railway Station Police Outpost In-Charge Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Shahidullah said police have detained Monjur Mia, 55, from the train at Kamalapur Railway Station in Dhaka when he was travelling on the train from Chattogram on a non-window seat.
When the train reached Narsingdi Railway Station and the passenger from the window seat disembarked, Monjur attempted to move to that seat.
But in the meantime, Jhumar, who was waiting at the station, placed his bag on the seat through the window, said the SI quoting locals.
An altercation took place between them when Jhumor boarded the train and both of them vying for the window seat. During the argument, Monjur punched and kicked Jhumor, leaving him critically injured.
Jhumor was then rushed to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, said Mahmudul Kabir Bashar, residential medical officer of the hospital.
Legal action would be taken in this regard, the SI added.
