FENI, June 9: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested eight people on charge of extortion in the transportation sector in Sonazagi Upazila of the district on Saturday night.
The arrested are: Md Jashim Uddin, 30, Md Emran Hossain, 36, AKM Mainul Haque Chowdhury Mainuddin, 37, AKM Mofazzal Haque Chowdhury, 48, Md Shahidul Islam, 34, Nur Karim, 27, Sirajul Islam, 42, and Rabiul Haque, 29.
RAB sources said on information that some people collecting extortion money from different trucks, mini-trucks and CNG-run auto-rickshaws at night, a team of the elite force conducted a special drive and arrested the eight from Duck Banglow, College Road and Zero Point areas of Sonagazi Upazila.
RAB members also recovered the collected extortion money Tk 49,805 from their possession at that time.
The arrested were, later, handed over to Sonagazi Model Police Station on Sunday for taking legal actions.
RAB-7 Feni Camp Commander Squadron Leader Mohammad Sadequl Islam confirmed the matter.
