Four minor children and a teenage girl drowned in separate incidents in three districts - Sherpur, Bhola and Dinajpur, recently.
SHERPUR: A teenage girl and her brother drowned while bathing in the Ghoramara River in Nokla Upazila of the district recently.
The deceased were identified as Maria Akter Mim, 13, a fourth grader, and her brother Masud Rana, 8, a student of class one. Both of them were children of Motaleb Hossain and residents of Biharipara area under Gonopoddi Union in the upazila.
According to the relatives of the deceased, the duo went to the river to take bath. At that time, they went missing in the river, and drowned there.
Sensing their absence, the family members started searching for them and recovered their bodies from the river after few hours.
Officer-in-Charge of Nokla Police Station (PS) Abdul Qader Khan confirmed the incident, adding that an unnatural death case was filed with the PS in this regard.
MONPURA, BHOLA: A minor child drowned in a pond while his parents were casting their votes at Monpura Upazila Parishad polls in the district recently.
The deceased was identified as Shamim, 5, son of Sohag, a resident of Ward No. 7 under Uttar Sakuchia Union in the upazila.
It was known that the parents of the deceased went to the nearby polling centre to cast their votes, leaving the child alone in the house. When they returned home, they did not find the child at home and started searching for him.
They then found the child floating in a pond next to the house and took him to Monpura Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physicians declared him dead.
Confirming the death matter, on-duty medical officer of the health complex Kabir Sohel said Shamim had died before being taken to the hospital.
DINAJPUR: A two minor children drowned while bathing in the Punarbhaba River in Sadar Upazila of the district recently.
Later on, the bodies were recovered from Bangibecha Bridge area of the river six hours after they went missing.
The deceased were identified as Raiyan, 7, son of Abdus Salam, and his cousin sister Eyanur Rafi, 7, daughter of Akbar Ali, residents of Bangibecha area in the upazila.
According to locals, the two cousins were playing on the bank of the river. At one stage, they went to the river to take bath, and drowned there.
After sensing their absence, the family members started looking for them and found their bodies near Bangibecha Bridge.
Julfiqar Ali Swapan, councillor of Ward No. 1 in Dinajapur Municipality, confirmed the incident, adding that the bodies of the children were handed over to the family members after completion of legal procedures.
