More than 6 lakh people of the country are suffering from cataract. Every year the country sees two lakh new patients of the disease. 80 per cent of them reside in rural areas, according to the data revealed by the Bangladesh Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (BSCRS) on Tuesday at a cataract awareness programme at Bangladesh Eye Hospital in Dhanmondi.

Ophthalmology specialists said that despite development of treatment at the local community clinics and vision centres, many patients are out of treatment due to ignorance and negligence.
They urged patients as well as the family members of them to be aware of the disease and take timely medical treatment for prevention of the disease.

They decried that cataract patients do not care before the disease develops. Patients and family members are especially reluctant to undergo a surgery.

If early measures are taken, it is possible to get treatment without undergoing a surgery, said the ophthalmology specialists.

Former BSCRS President Dr Mahbub said, "In the last few decades, eye treatment has become more modern than any other treatment. Cataract surgery is the most common surgery in the world. Yet we have a massive lack of awareness."

Dr Mahbub urged the government as well as private organisations to come forward to spread awareness.

BSCRS Secretary Dr Ishtiaq Anwar said cataract mostly affect older people. Relief from the disease is possible if action is taken before it becomes serious.

BSCRS President Dr Ashraf Saeed said there is ignorance about cataract even among the educated people.

Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) President Dr Ava Hossain said if cataract surgery is done on time, it is possible to recover 100 per cent.
