GOPALGANJ, June 13: A woman succumbed to her injuries five days after being set on fire by her husband in Muksudpur Upazila of the district on Monday.
Helena Akter, 36, passed away at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Monday morning.
The tragic incident occurred late at night on June 6 in Dumuria Village under Gohala Union of the upazila.
Helenas 11-year-old son, Antar, also suffered severe burns and remains in critical condition at the same hospital.
The victims brother, Imran, said that Helena had been married to Osman Sheikh of Dumuria village for 14 years. Throughout their marriage, she was subjected to repeated physical abuse. Due to her husbands addiction issues, Helena often stayed at her parental home.
On the night of the incident, Helena and her son were asleep when Osman threw petrol through the window and set them on fire before fleeing the scene.
Locals rushed to their screams, rescued them and took the victims to nearby Rajair Hospital. They were subsequently transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital and then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Officer-in-Charge of Muksudpur Police Station Mohammad Ashraful Alam confirmed the death and said that legal procedure would be followed to hand over the body to the family.
