RAJSHAHI, June 19: In a single year, mango contract farming in the district has increased significantly, fetching foreign exchange earnings.

This year, the number of contract farming growers has increased to 118 from 80 in the last year.

According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAR)-Rajshahi,   since 2016 mangoes of Rajshahi have been exported; a total of 9.9 metric tons (MT) of mangoes were exported in 2023; then growers got profits of about Tk 8 lakh; and this year, 2024, 3,497.35 MT mangoes have been produced in the district for exports.

A total of 118 growers have signed agreements to supply these mangoes against last years 80 growers.

The contract farming indicators include hygiene production, safety and quality protection, environmental safety, cleanliness and health rules for agriculture workers.

A grower of Koligram Village in Bagha Upazila Shafiqul Islam said, this year in the first phase 1,800 kg mangoes of Khirshapati have been exported from his Sadi Enterprise while 200 kg ones were sent from garden of grower Biddut Hossain.

"This season we have taken good preparation. The contract farming is increasing; contract farming has accountability; that is why mangoes go abroad safely," he added.

He further said, "I had started with 50 bighas, and now I am cultivating 300 bighas; earlier 14-15 men would work in my mango farm; and now 20-25 ones are working in the farm."

Mostly Khirshapat, Totpori, Fazli and Amrupali mangoes are exported, he said.

These are highly demanded, and their farming is increasing, he added.

"Packing houses are now set up here. After their completion, we will have to pack in Dhaka. We are also set to get access to using Rajshahi Airport," he added.

General Secretary of Rajashahi Food Producer  Association Hafizur Rahman Khan said, "The support we need from the government is solving  increased fare of cargo. We have sought solutions of different problems including cargo issue from the government. Some of these have been solved, but not entirely."

"If some subsidy is given to  cargo fare,  it will benefit growers. The fare we give falls on growers," he added.
Bagha Upazila Agriculture Officer Shafiuallah Sulrtan said, "We are giving certificate after proper testing for mangoes;.

Later on, another certificate is given from the Dhakas Shympur Packing House & Quarantine Centre," he added.
"We are working with growers. They are given necessary training and supervising," he added.

DAES Deputy Director Umme Salma said, the mango contract farming is increasing; through the contract farming, safe mangoes are produced; but all mangoes are not exported; in the last year, 1,700 MT mangoes were exported in 2022;   and in 2023, 3,500 MT mangoes were exported.

Mangoes are also sent to super shops in the country, the official maintained.
