SIRAJGANJ, June 22: The water level swelling in the Jamuna River in the district is continuing, causing erosion.

Upstream hilly tide and heavy rain have pushed up the water level of the river.

Due to the water swelling, low areas and crops in chars are getting submerged.

Farmers are in tension because of their inundated croplands.

A farmer in Kawlakula area in Sadar Upazila said, "The Jamuna water is increasing rapidly. Water is entering chars. I have cultivated sesame on three bighas and jute on four bighas. But I am in tension whether I can be able to harvest the crops."

Sub-Divisional  Engineer of the Water Development Board (WDB)-Sirajganj Ronjit Kumar Sarker confirmed the swelling in the Jamuna.

On Friday (June 21) morning, the water level increased in the last 24 hours by 20 centimetre at hard point of Sirajganj, but flowed below 93 centimetre of the danger mark.

The water flow swelled by 43 centimetre on Wednesday and 37 centimetre on Thursday.

In the last 24 hours, the Jamuna water swelled by 26 cenmetre and is flowing below 93 centimetre at Kazipur Meghai Point. At that point, the water increased by 37 centimetre on Wednesday and 36 centimetre on Thursday.

The WDB official said, according to the weather office sources as the water rising is continuing, it can exceed the danger mark at the Sirajganj Town Protection Embankment hard point.

The water will start to recede after June 30, he added.

He further said, at this moment, there is no possibility of flood at a large scale. Despite that the WDB has taken overall preparations to face any flood, he added.

Now along with the swelling in the Jamuna River, the erosion has started in Shahzadpur Upazila.

In a span of few days, over 150 houses and different installations were devoured by the Jamuna in the upazila.

Locals said, erosions have been taking place in Jalalpur, Khukni, and Koijuri unions areas for the last few years.

Abdullah Sheikh of Jalalpur Union said, if preventive measures are not taken right now, hundreds of houses and installations will disappear.

Imam of Jalalpur Mosque Hafez Abdul Mannan said, madrasa, mosque, and Bikhola Government Primary School and other installations are under erosion threat.

Executive Engineer of WDB-Sirajganj Mahbubur Rahman said, to prevent the erosion, an embankment of six kilometre in the right bank of the Jamuna in Shahzadpur Upazila is being constructed at Tk 650 crore.

As the work was not completed by June, the time has been extended by one year, he added.

He further said, the water swelling has started suddenly, and, for the time being, geo- bags are being dumped.
