AL emerges stronger like phoenix despite attempts to wipe it out: Hasina

Comparing the ruling Awami League (AL) to the mythological phoenix, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also president of AL, stated that despite repeated attempts to wipe out the party, it has always emerged stronger, owing to its roots among the common people of Bangladesh.

"Repeated attempts had been made to wipe out the party. But, Awami League is an organization of the mass people, and Awami League is an organization for peoples rights. So even after repeated attacks, this party could not be harmed. Awami League has risen from the ashes like a phoenix bird after being burned," she said while addressing the 75th founding anniversary discussion of Awami League at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon.

In the meeting, the AL President asked the party men and leaders to strengthen the party more by organizing it and achieving the confidence of the mass people by serving them during their time of need.

Among others, party General Secretary Obaidul Quader also spoke.

Opposition Leaders to the Jatiya Sangsad GM Quader, also Chairman of Jatiya Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President Hasanul Haq Inu, Bangladesh Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon and other senior leaders of the 14-Party Alliance, and diplomats from different countries were present in the meeting.

Sheikh Hasina asked the party men to work for a well-organised party and achieve peoples confidence and trust so that no attack or conspiracy can destroy the party as it is like a phoenix bird which rises from the ashes of the fire.

Referring to the attempt of ruining the AL in 2007 by forming the kings party, she said, "They failed in doing such acts as the grassroots people and dedicated leaders and activists are the main strength of the Awami League."

AL is like a phoenix bird which rises from the ashes of the fire, the Prime Minister said, adding, "The phoenix is an immortal bird that cyclically regenerates or is otherwise born again, according to mythology."

She urged party leaders and activists to stand by the people without fear of death.

Sheikh Hasina called for a collective effort to advance the nation, emphasizing, "Peoples trust must be earned. Today, Bangladesh has become a role model in the world due to the continued democratic trend."

She reminded all that the AL is the party to establish rights of the people and carry out socio-economic advancement of the country. She said all the achievements of the nation, including the countrys independence and current socio-economic development, have been earned under the leadership of the Awami League.

"So, no attacks could harm the Awami League," she added.

The AL President recalled the contribution of its numerous leaders and activists to take the party to such a strong position after going through inhuman torture.

"Yet, they remained in the Awami League and got organised to make it stronger," she said.

She asked her party men to realise that the party is the main component of their power.

The AL chief said several senior leaders deserted her party thinking themselves bigger than the party.

But, they had forgotten that star glitter in the sky with the light of the sun, she said.

The AL leaders who left the party are now almost lost or completely lost as they used to glitter with the light of the party, she said.

She said they have taken back some of them in the party as they realized their mistakes while some of them have been engaging in plot to thwart the AL from power.

The Prime Minister said the party elected her as its President through the 1981 council.

"After being elected as the President of the Awami League, I returned to the country by depriving my children of mothers love and affection mainly to implement the dream of my father to give the countrymen a beautiful and developed life by changing their fate," she said.

Since then, she said, she has been tirelessly working to accomplish the dream of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Briefly describing various measures taken by her government to ensure education, health, accommodation, food, clothing and electricity for all, she said," Bangladesh has made the tremendous development due to the steps taken by the Awami League. Bangladesh has been recognized as the role model on the global stage for the development and its citizens are now roaming across the globe keeping heads high, she said.

Earlier in the afternoon, thousands of Awami League leaders and activists gathered at Suhrawardy Udyan and surrounding areas to celebrate the partys 75th founding anniversary.

The discussion programme, chaired by Sheikh Hasina, formally began at 3:35pm.

Later, a mind-blowing cultural show was also organized at the same place. AL Cultural Secretary Ashim Kumar Ukil moderated the event.
