Drive to recover Gas Babu's phones from Jhenidah ponds ends

Drive to recover three mobile phones of Awami League leader Kazi Kamal Ahmed alias Gas Babu, an accused of Jhenidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar murder case, concluded on Wednesday (June 26) afternoon.

A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted searches in a pond behind Ganguly Hotel at Payra Chattar in Jhenaidah to recover three mobile phones used by Gas Babu to contact with Anar murder case accused Shimul Bhuiyan on Whatsapp.

Earlier, a DB team led by Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch head Harun-or Rashid arrived at Jhenaidah by a helicopter from Dhaka to supervise the recovery drive of mobile phones from the pond.

In the morning, Jhenidah Awami League's Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Kazi Kamal Ahmed alias Gas Babu was brought at Payra Chattar from Jhenidah District Jail. Led by Jhenidah Senior Judicial Magistrate Faruque Azam, searches were carried out in a pond on the northern side of Payra Chattar to recover the mobile phones.

During the searches in the pond, divers, and fishermen were employed. At that time, law enforcers put a security blanket in place over Jhenidah town.

Later, they conducted searches in another pond of Jhenidah town's stadium area.

At one stage of the searches, DB chief Harun-or Rashid at a press briefing said a total of seven people took part in MP Anar murder in Kolkata. Five of them have been arrested, while efforts are going on to arrest the rest two people. "We will be able to arrest them wherever they are staying now -- in the sea or beneath the ground. No innocent will be harassed and none of the accused will be spared."

Anar murder case investigation officer (IO) DMP's DB police's assistant commissioner Mahfuzur Rahman, Jhenidah Senior Judicial Magistrate Faruque Azam, Jhenidah Police Super Azim ul Ahsan and other senior police officials were present.

Earlier, a DB team led by Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch head Harun-or Rashid arrived at Jhenaidah by a helicopter from Dhaka at around 12:00pm on Wednesday (June 26) to recover the mobile phones.

It may be mentioned that law enforcers arrested Gas Babu from Adarshapara area in Jhenidah town at night on June 6 last. Arrested Babu is Jhenidah District Awami League's Relief and Social Welfare Secretary. He is also a close relative of Shimul Bhuiyan, one of the accused of MP Anwarul Azim Anar murder case.
