River erosion threatens villagers at Sariakandi

BOGURA, June 26:  Erosion is continuing in different areas in Sariakandi Upazila of the district, breaking villages and agriculture lands and displacing villagers.

The erosion has started with receding water in the Jamuna River in the upazila, but pushing up the water in the Bangali River.  

According to Water Development Board (WDB)-Bogura, in the last 24 hours, 29 centimetre of water recession was recorded.

Sub-Divisional Engineer of the WDB Humayun Kabir said, Shimultair Village is getting broken again; a 400-metre area collapse was reported in Ichhamara Village; and the Jamuna River banking people are passing sleepless nights.

Since Sunday last, the Jamuna water has started to recede in the upazila. The water level in the river was 15.26 metre on Saturday, and it decreased to 14.97 metre at 3pm on Sunday.

Till 6pm on Sunday the water height decreased by 29 centimetre.

Despite the fall of water level at Sariakandi Point on Sunday, the water was flowing above 1.28 centimetre of the danger mark.

The Bangali River is swelling. The danger mark of this river is 15.40 metre. On Sunday the water level height was 13.84 metre.

At present, this river is flowing below 1.77 metre of the danger level.

The erosion by the Jamuna River is continuing in Shimultair Village at Chaluabari Uinon; some families of the river are moving to safe places for shelter.

The erosion in Ichhamara Godakhali Village at Kamalpur Union has turned severe, stretching across about 400 metre; over 50 bighas of agriculture land have been devoured;    also geo-bags across about 20 metre stretches collapsed; over 300 families have been under the erosion threat in the village; the flood protection embankment has also been under threat.

Severe erosion was also reported in the north side of Manikdair Village along the Motherganj border.
The erosion was also reported in Char Ghagua Village at Kajla Union, and it is continuing in Shankorpur Char at Bohail Union, breaking some agriculture lands.  

Sariakandi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Towhidur Rahman said, "I have already inspected the eroded area of Ichhamara Village. Authorities have been informed about taking necessary preventive measures. I hope the preventive work will start very soon on an emergency basis."
