Several hundred students blocked the Shahbagh intersection in the capital for an hour on Tuesday afternoon in protest against reinstatement of the quota system in government job.

Protesting High Courts decision to reinstate the quota system in government jobs, students from several universities and colleges jointly blocked Dhakas Shahbagh intersection.

Earlier in the day, around 2:45pm, students from Dhaka University staged a protest rally in front of the Central Library. The group marched to the Raju Sculpture on the campus before proceeding to Shahbagh to join other demonstrators.

Thousands of students from Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Dhaka College, Eden College, and other nearby institutions participated in the protest. They shouted slogans against the quota system, demanding its cancellation in government job recruitment.

There was intense traffic congestion on the roads between Bangla Motor and Shahbagh, Shahbagh and Science Lab, and Shahbagh and Kakrail due to the students action. They left the intersection around 4:45pm.

Nahid Islam, one of the organisers of the Boishommo Birodhi Chattra Andolon, said, "We have resumed the protest from  Monday. The protest will continue for the next two days."

Another protester said they would march to the DU Vice-chancellors residence and stage a sit-in demanding that the Central Library be opened.

Students started the movement after the HC on June 5 declared illegal the government decision that in 2018 cancelled the 30 per cent quota system for the freedom fighters children in the civil service of ninth to 13th grades.

Our Barishal Correspondent adds students of Barisal University (BU) blocked the Dhaka-Barishal Highway for an hour on Tuesday protesting restoration of quota system in government jobs.

Hundreds of vehicles were stuck on both sides of the highway as the students put up blockade from 11:30am to 12:30pm.

Earlier, the students held a protest rally and procession for the second day at the university gate in the morning.

The agitated students demanded the cancellation of all quotas in government jobs except those for people with disability and ethnic groups.

Speakers said that the quota system is a curse for the general students. Some people benefit from the quota facility while general students are deprived of jobs based on merits, they said.

Therefore, all quotas except the two should be abolished immediately. Otherwise, the movement will continue, the students said.

Abdur Rahman Mukul, Officer-in-Charge of Bandar Police Station of Barishal Metropolitan Police, said the students blocked the highway but the situation is now normal.
