Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) on Tuesday arrested a young man reportedly for raping a girl after posing as a sub-inspector of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) at Abhaynagar upazila in
Jashore district.
The accused, Sumon Bosu, of Manikhar village in Gopalganj Sadar upazila, was arrested from his house on Tuesday morning.
Reshma Sharmin, Police Superintendent of PBI in Jashore, confirmed the matter on Wednesday, and said that the victim was working online to earn money after being failed to secure a job completing her agricultural diploma. She met the accused on Facebook, where he introduced himself as a sub-inspector of DNC.
Over time, their online interactions turned into a romantic relationship. Sumon frequently visited the victim’s home due to this relationship. The accused
raped the victim several times under the guise of marriage proposals, renting rooms in various hotels in Jashore district and Arunima Resort in Narail district, she said.
Sumon also borrowed a total of Tk 1,489,880 from the victim through several mobile banking systems for personal needs. Suspicion arose in the victim when she discovered the accused real marital status and family through inquiries at his village home. When she demanded her money back, Sumon refused to return it, she said.
Later, the victim filed a case with Abhaynagar Police Station on Tuesday.
Superintendent Reshma Sharmin further added that following the complaint, the PBI team conducted an operation in the accused village around 9 am and arrested Sumon.
During primary questioning, the accused confessed to his crimes and he was subsequently presented in court on Wednesday.
