Separate courts in two days sentenced a man to death and seven others to life-term imprisonment in different murder cases in two districts - Pirojpur and Jashore.

PIROJPUR: A court in the district on Monday sentenced seven individuals including a couple and their son to life-term imprisonment for killing a man over a land dispute in Nazirpur Upazila in 2011.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Muktagir Alam handed down the verdict in the afternoon.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each, and in default, they will have to suffer six more months in jail.

The convicts are: Delwar Sheikh, 48, Abul Sheikh, 58, Babul Mallik, 49, Sirajul Haque Sheikh, 71, Raju Sheikh, 31, and Fatema Begum, 58, wife of Sirajul Haque Sheikh, residents of Nazirpur Upazila in Pirojpur; and Jafar Sheikh, 58, son of Rasul Sheikh, hails from Chitalmari Upazila in Bagerhat District.

The court also acquitted ten individuals as the allegations brought against them could not be proven.

They are: Jahur Sheikh, Hajera Khanam, Imarat Khan, Rabeya Begum, Sohag Khan, Suman Khan, Manju Begum, Babu Mir, Abdur Rob Sheikh, and another Jafar Sheikh.

Among the accused, Razzak Mallik and Hatem Ali Sheikh passed away during the trial.

According to the prosecution, at around 7:30am of April 25, 2011, Jasim Khan and his brother Raju Khan were ambushed by the accused while they were walking in front of their house in Patilakhali Village in Nazirpur Upazila.  The assailants, armed with local weapons, attacked them over a longstanding    enmity.

As Jasim tried to run back to his house, he was struck on the head with a machete by Hatem Ali Sheikh and Delwar Sheikh. After falling to the ground, Jasim was beaten with iron rods and sticks, causing severe injuries.

Neighbours rushed to help upon hearing their cries, but the attackers dragged Jasim to Hatem Sheikhs house where they confined him.

Jasims cousin brother Wahiduzzaman informed the local police, who arrived and took Jasim to Nazirpur Upazila Health Complex, where he was declared as dead by the on-duty doctor.

On the same day, Jasims brother Raju Khan filed a murder case with Nazirpur Police Station (PS) against 22 people.

Investigation officer of the case inspector Abdul Malek Hawladar submitted the charge-sheet to the court against 19 people on August 7, 2011.

Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Zahurul Islam confirmed the matter, adding that hearing 16 witnesses, the court delivered the verdict in the presence of all the accused.

Out of the 19 accused mentioned in the charge-sheet, two passed away during the trial.

Defence lawyer Kazi Elias Hossain expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict and announced plans to appeal before a higher court.

JASHORE: A court in the district on Sunday sentenced a man to death for killing his parents in Chaugachha Upazila in 2019.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Jewel Adhikari handed down the verdict in the afternoon.

The condemned convict is Milon Uddin, 32, son of Mohir Uddin and Anwara Begum, a resident of Ramkrishnapur Village under Chaugachha Upazila.

The court also fined him Tk 5,000.

According to the prosecution, Milon was known for his unruly behaviour and used to demand money from his parents frequently. He used to roam around aimlessly, refusing to work despite their encouragement. In the morning of December 25, 2019, Milon asked his father Mohir Uddin, 62, for Tk 2,000 as pocket money. When his father refused, Milon attacked him with a sharp weapon. His mother Anwara Begum, 55, was also attacked when she tried to intervene.

Both the parents succumbed to their injuries on the spot due to excessive bleeding.

Following the incident, Milons brother Humayun Kabir filed a murder case with Chaugachha PS against him.

Police then submitted the charge-sheet to the court and following this, the court pronounced the verdict on Sunday after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.
