Germany's World Cup winner
Thomas Muller has hinted at his international retirement following Germany's elimination from
Euro 2024.
Muller and his German teammates lost 2-1 to
Spain in a quarter-final match played in Stuttgart on Friday night.
Spain took the lead in the 51st minute through Dani Olmo, but the host deservedly equalized through Florian Wirtz in the 89th minute.
However, Mikel Merino broke the hearts of the German fans after netting the winning goal in the 119th minute to ensure Spain advanced to the last-4.
After the game, Muller, who made his senior debut for Germany back in 2010 dropped a big retirement claim, telling Sky Sport (via Fabrizio Romano):
“It’s very likely that this was my last game with Germany, yes.”
Later, Muller posted an emotional message on Instagram but did not hint towards retirement.
"I am proud to be a part of this team and above all proud to be a German. Thanks to everyone who cheered with us and were great hosts. Let's take this feeling into our daily lives right now in current times," he wrote.
Another German legend Tony Kroos hung up his boots after the match, having previously announced that Euro 2024 at home would be his swansong as a professional footballer.
Meanwhile Spain after defeating Germany will now face France, who advanced to the last 4 of Euro 2024 after beating Portugal in a penalty shootout.
