Road mishaps claim 12 lives in eight dists

A total of 12 people including three women have been killed and at least six others injured in separate road accidents in eight districts - Joypurhat, Narayanganj, Bagerhat, Noakhali, Jashore, Dinajpur, Natore and Lalmonirhat, in four days.
JOYPURHAT: A woman was killed in a road accident in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday noon.
The accident took place on the Joypurhat-Bogura highway in Hichmi area of the upazila at around 12:30 pm.
The deceased was identified as Rabeya Begum, 60, a resident of Paikar Village in the upazila.
Police and local sources said a truck hit Rabeya Begum when she was walking towards Hichmi Bazar on the side the Joypurhat-Bogura highway at around 12:30, which left her critically injured.
Locals then rescued the injured and took her to Joypurhat General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared the woman dead.
Being informed, police recovered the body.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Joypurhat Sadar Police Station (PS) Humayun Kabir confirmed the incident, adding that an unnatural death case was filed in this connection.
NARAYANGANJ: A man was killed after being hit by a bus in Siddhirganj of the city on Saturday morning.
The accident took place on the Mijmiji Matin road in front of Basundhara Coil Factory under Siddhirganj PS at around 10 am.
The deceased was identified as Shree Nandalal Das, 50, son of late Shuvash Chandra Das, hailed from Charlalpur Village under Ashuganj Upazila in Brahmanbaria District. He was a trader by profession.
It was known that Nandalal came to visit his partner Sekandars rented house in Mouchak area of Siddhirganj in the city recently.
Sekandar said he along with Nandalal went out of the house at around 10 am on Saturday to go to Rajshahi for business purpose. At that time, a bus of Nilachal Paribahan hit Nandalal in front of Basundhara Coil Factory, leaving him critically injured.
Injured Nandalal was then rescued and taken to Pro-Active Hospital at Signboard, where the on-duty doctor referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) following the deterioration of his condition.
Later on, Nandalal was declared dead by the on-duty doctor at the DMCH at around 11:30 am.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to the DMCH morgue for an autopsy.
Siddhirganj PS OC Abu Bakar Siddique confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken if any complaint is received from the deceaseds family.
BAGERHAT: Two separate road accidents in Mollahat Upazila of the district claimed lives of a motorcyclist and a passenger of an auto-rickshaw on Saturday morning.
The deceased were identified as Asad Sheikh, 40, son of Sadek Sheikh of Jugihati Village in Khulna District, and Md Anwar, 35, son of late Salam Khan of Gangni area in Mollahat Upazila of Bagerhat.
According to police and local sources, an unidentified vehicle heading towards Dhaka from Khulna hit a motorcycle carrying Asad at Kahalpur in the upazila at around 7:30 am, leaving him dead on the spot.
Mollahat Highway PS OC Sheikh Nuruzzaman confirmed the incident, adding that on information, police recovered the body.
In another incident, auto-rickshaw passenger Anwar was killed after being hit by a bus in front of Sagar Filling Station of the upazila at around 9:45 am.
Being informed, police recovered the body.
Mollahat PS OC Md Ashraful Alam confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.
NOAKHALI: A pregnant woman and her brother were killed as a covered van crashed an auto-rickshaw on the Begumganj-Sonaimuri regional highway in Sonaimuri Upazila of the district on Friday noon.
The accident took place at around 12:45 pm in front of Madina Masque adjacent to the Bagadia North Bridge of the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Beauty Akter, 24, daughter of late Bashir Ullah, and her younger brother Md Easin, 17, residents of Bagadia Village under Ward No. 9 in Bajra Union of the upazila.
According to the family members of the deceased, Beauty along with her brother was going to visit a doctor at Sonaimuri Bazaar at noon riding on a battery-operated auto-rickshaw. On the way, a speedy covered van from Cumilla rammed the auto-rickshaw when the driver of the vehicle trying to cross the regional highway, which left the siblings seriously injured.
Locals then rescued the injured and took them to Sonaimuri Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physicians declared the duo dead.
Being informed, police recovered the bodies.
However, the law enforcers have seized both the vehicles from the scene.
Chandraganj Highway PS OC Ruhul Amin confirmed the incident, adding that filing of a case is underway in this connection.
SHARSHA, JASHORE: A motorcyclist was killed after a bus hit a motorcycle in Sharsha Upazila of the district on Friday morning.
The accident took place near Baganchra Bazar in Amirs Muri Mill area of the upazila at around 11 am.
The deceased was identified as Alamgir Karir, 40, a resident of Kismat Ilishpur Village under Kaiba Union in the upazila.
A bus, carrying passengers, hit a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction in the area while Alamgir Kabir was going home to Baguri from Baganchra Bazar. Kabir died on the spot.
On information, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceaseds family members without an autopsy as per their request.
However, the law enforcers have seized the killer bus, but its driver managed to flee the scene.
Navaran Highway PS OC Jayanto Kumar Das confirmed the incident.  
DINAJPUR: A motorcyclist and a microbus driver were killed and five others injured in separate road accidents in Sadar Upazila of the district on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as motorcyclist Salim Hossain, 30, son of Shaukat Hossain, a resident of Amtali area under Chirirbandar Upazila, and microbus driver Jewel Hossain, 48, son of Antaj Ali, a resident of Dakshin Devipur Village under Ghoraghat Upazila in the district.
Quoting locals, Dinajpur Kotwali PS OC Md Farid Hossain said motorcyclist Salim was crushed under a goods-laden truck on the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj regional highway in Panchbari area in the upazila at around 3:30 pm. He died on the spot and another rider was injured.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Meanwhile, a microbus and a mango-laden pickup van collided head-on with each other on the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj regional highway in Kaugaon intersection area at around 10 am, which left five people including the driver and helper of the microbus injured, said OC Md Farid Hossain.
The injured were rescued and taken to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital, where microbus driver Jewel Hossain succumbed to his injuries at around 4 pm.
Preparations are underway to file a case in this incident, Farid Hossain added.
NATORE: A woman and her minor daughter were killed after a microbus and an auto-rickshaw collided with each other in Lalpur Upazila of the district on Thursday noon.
The accident took place on the Lalpur-Bagha regional road in Rahimpur Jamtala area under the upazila at around 1:30 pm.
The deceased woman was identified as Rubina Khatun, 28, wife of Mahbub Alam, a resident of Udhanpara Village in Lalpur Upazila, and her daughter Rokeya Khatun, 3.
Quoting locals, Lalpur PS OC Nashim Ahmed said Rokeya Khatun and her daughter were returning to Lalpur riding on an auto-rickshaw from Bagha Upazila in Rajshahi after visiting a doctor.
The accident occurred in the area when a microbus coming from the opposite direction collided head-on with the auto-rickshaw at around 1:30 pm, which left the duo dead on the spot.
The official further said that police have seized the microbus from the scene and legal action is under process in this connection.
LALMONIRHAT: A man was killed after being hit by a truck in Kaliganj Upazila of the district on Wednesday.
The accident took place in Shrutidhar area adjacent to Tushbhandar Chowdhury intersection on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway of the upazila at noon.
The deceased was identified as Ranju Mia, 55, son of late Bhelu Sheikh, a resident of Nohali Village under Bhotmari Union in the upazila. He was nut trader by profession.
Local sources said Ranju was returning home from Chowdhury Bazar at noon riding on a bicycle. On the way, he stopped his bicycle and started talking over mobile phone beside the highway in Shrutidhar area. At that time, a stone-laden truck from Burimari hit him, leaving Ranju critically injured.
Locals then rescued the injured and took to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Being informed, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceaseds family members without an autopsy as no complaint was lodged from them.  
Kaliganj PS OC Imtiaz Kabir confirmed the incident.
