Former Pakistani leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed signed a contract with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as a spin bowling coach last April. Initially, the agreement was until the recently concluded T20 World Cup. Although the T20 World Cup ended in disappointment for the Bangladesh team, leg-spinner Rishad Hossain performed outstandingly and many believe that much of the credit goes to Mushtaq.
The BCB now wants to sign a long-term contract with him as it is satisfied with his work. BCB president Nazmul Hasan recently told reporters that they are ready to extend the contract with Mushtaq. However, it was learned that Mushtaq has signed a new contract with the England Under-19 team. Therefore, the BCB is uncertain about securing Mushtaq for Bangladesh teams tour to Pakistan next month.
"He had already made some agreements. Apart from the one with the England Cricket Board, he has some other contracts," BCB Chief Executive Nizam Uddin Chowdhury told reporters at the BCB office in Mirpur on Monday. "Besides, we signed him initially with only the T20 World Cup in mind. We talked to him today. He has some previous contracts until December."
Chowdhury believes that Mushtaq will allocate time for Bangladesh outside of his other commitments. He said, "We have sent the schedule of our upcoming series. After reviewing it, he will give a decision as soon as possible. In the last press conference, our president mentioned that we are interested in him. Since we are getting positive responses from him as well, we are considering him for now."
Mushtaq was one of the members of Pakistans 1992 World Cup-winning team. This legendary leg-spinner has played 144 ODIs and 52 Tests for Pakistan. He then joined the coaching profession, serving as the spin bowling coach of England from 2008 to 2014.
In 2014, he was Pakistans bowling consultant, a position he held until May 2016. He served as West Indies assistant coach and spin bowling consultant in 2018 and was the spin bowling coach of the Pakistan team on the tour of England in June 2020.
