Eight people drown in five districts

Five minor children and three teenagers drowned in separate incidents in five districts - Bogura, Naogaon, Sirajganj, Narayanganj and Coxs Bazar, in recent times.
 
BOGURA: Two minor sisters drowned in a pond in Sadar Upazila of the district on Sunday noon.

The incident took place in Baropur Modhdhopara Barobari area of the upazila at around 12 pm.

The deceased were identified as Himu, 5, and her sister Jannat, 3, daughters of Habib of the aforesaid area.

Quoting the family members of the deceased, Fulbari Police Outpost Sub-Inspector (SI) Aminul Islam said that both the sisters slipped in a pond next to their house when they were playing beside it at around 12 pm, and drowned there.

Realising their absence for a while, the family members started searching for them and found them floating on the water, he said.

They then rescued Himu and Jannat from the pond and took them to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared the duo dead, said the SI.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies and handed those over to the deceaseds family members after completion of legal procedures, the police official added.

DHAMOIRHAT, NAOGAON: Two minor brothers dawned in a pond in Dhamoirhat Upazila of the district on Sunday noon.

The incident took place in Possim Cokvabani Village under Khelna Union of the upazila at around 12 pm.
The deceased were identified as Ram, 3, and Lakshman, 3, sons of Suzit Orau, residents of the aforesaid area.  

Local Union Parishad (UP) Member Abu Salam said that the duo fell into a pond near their house while they were playing on its bank.

Later on, local people spotted the twos floating bodies in the pond when they were searching the children as they were missing for a long time.

They then recovered the bodies from the pond.

Being informed, police visited the scene.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhamoirhat Police Station (PS) Md Bahauddin Faruqi confirmed the incident.

SIRAJGANJ: Two teenage boys drowned and another was injured after a boat capsized in the Baral River in Shahjadpur Upazila of the district on Saturday.

The incident took place in Potazia Charmatha area of the upazila at around 12:45 pm.

The deceased were identified as Sajal, 16, son of Shah Alam, and Tanmoy, 18, son of Touhid. Both of them were residents of Dariapur area in the upazila town.

Shahjadpur PS OC Sabuj Rana said a boat carrying nine people including Sajal and Tanmoy all of a sudden sank in the area while they were crossing the Baral River at around 12:45 pm. Then, Sajal and Tanmoy drowned as they could not swim while other seven people managed to swim ashore.

Later on, locals rescued them and took them to Shahjadpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the duo dead.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies and handed those over to their families, the OC added.
NARAYANGANJ: A schoolboy drowned in a river in Araihazar Upazila of the district on Saturday.

The incident took place in Raipura Village under Uchingpura Union of the upazila at noon.
 
The deceased was identified as Abir, son of Ujjal, a resident of the village. He was an eighth grader of Shamvupura High School.

Local sources Abir along with his friends was swimming in the river beside the school at the tiffin period. At one stage, he went missing there due to strong current of the river.

On information, a team of divers from Araihazar Fire Service Station rushed to the scene and conducted a search operation. They then recovered the body of the schoolboy from the river at around 4 pm.      
Araihazar PS OC Ahsan Ullah confirmed the incident.

UKHIYA, COXS BAZAR: A minor child drowned in the flood water in Ukhiya Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Purba Marichya Halukia Para area under Haldiapalang Union of the upazila at noon.

The deceased was identified as Md Rakib, 7, son of Ali Akbar, a resident of the same area.
Local sources said Rakib went out of the house at noon to play around. At one stage, he fell in the flood water and went missing there.

Later on, locals spotted his body floating on the water and informed the matter to the family members.
Being informed, police rushed to the scene and recovered the body of the deceased.

Later on, the body was handed over to the deceaseds family members without an autopsy as per their request, said Haldiapalang UP Chairman Imrul Kayes Chowdhury.

Ukhiya PS OC Md Shamim Hossain confirmed the incident.
