MEHERPUR, July 8: The price of green chilli has increased alarmingly in retail markets of the district.

The green chilli was selling at Tk 200 to 220 per kilogram (KG) for the last one week in the local markets. But the price of the green chilli increased by about Tk 100 per kg in a week.

Consumers of middle income and lower middle income groups are suffering.

Retailers said, the price of green chilli has increased as rainfall damaged  a large number of chilli farms across the country; due to excessive rainfall, seasonal vegetable cultivation including chilli have been damaged, impacting retail markets.

Yousuf Biswas, a retailer of Baradi Kitchen Market in Sadar Upazila, said, the short supply of green chilli will continue for some days.

Traders said, flood in several parts of the country following incessant rain caused the supply shortage, thus pushing up the chilli price.
