The High Court on Tuesday upheld the lower courts death penalty verdict for Chandpur serial killer Rasu Kha in the murder case of Parveen Akter. The bench of Justice Syed Md Ziaul Karim and Justice KM Emrul Kayesh issued the ruling following an appeal petition hearing.
The court also commuted the death sentences of two other convicts, Zahirul Islam, Rasu Khas nephew, and Yunus, to life imprisonment.
Deputy Attorney General Manirul Islam represented the state during the proceedings.
Rasu Kha, son of Manu Kha alias Abu Kha from Madna village in Sadar upazila of Chandpur district, was initially arrested on October 7, 2009, in connection with the theft of a mosque fan. During the investigation, police traced a mobile phone linked to Rasu, leading to the discovery of his involvement in the murder of a young girl.
Rasu was subsequently placed on remand and confessed under Section 164, revealing his role in the killings of 11 women following rape.
On July 20, 2009 Rasu, along with two associates, strangled Parveen Akter to death after gang-raping her in Faridganj upazila of Chandpur district.
On April 22, 2015, a Khulna court sentenced Rasu Kha to death for the murder of garment worker Shahida.     —UNB
