CHARFASSON, BHOLA, July 11:  Fishermen in Charfasson Upazila of the district are facing livelihood crisis due to fishing ban in the sea.

According to sources at fishing villages, due to two-month long fishing ban over 50,000 fishing families in the upazila have fallen into living hardship.

In the absence of other works, their livelihood crisis is continuing in tandem with the ban.

Fish traders and warehouse owners are also counting business losses.

Now the Department of Fisheries (DoF) has given assurance of rehabilitation assistance to the workless fishers.

After start of the current 65-day fishing ban (May 20-July 23), all fishing trawlers of Jasim Uddin at Shamrajghat were anchored.

Fishers are passing hardship days due to price rises of all daily items. The essentials prices have been so abnormal that even middle income and upper income groups are facing living troubles.

Victim fishing families are not getting loans even because of the Cyclone Remal disaster.

Like Jasim more than 100 fishing trawlers are lying anchored at the Shamrajghat.

Fishers are passing idle time.

At present, the fish crisis is prevailing in the Meghna-Tentulia rivers.

According fishers data, 1,500 fishers of 20 fishing ghats in the district are passing income-less time.

Fisher Kamal Maji, 35, of the Samraj Natun Sluice area said, "I have been carrying out fishing since my childhood  due to poverty-hardship, without learning education; either we get good profits or suffer bad earnings; and this way now my 20 years of fishing life has been passing."

"After start of the 65-day ban, we have been catching fishes in rivers; but comparatively we are getting inadequate fishes including Hilsa; we have families- parents, wives and children; but we don know how to run our families," he added.

He was echoed by other fishers.

According to warehouse owners, all engaged in fishing are in big trouble.

Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Maruf Hossain Minar gave assurance of assistance for the fishers living in trouble.

He said, during the ban time, fishers can catch fishes in rivers; but this year salinity has increased in the rivers; that is why Hilsa fishes can move in the rivers due to lack of rainfall.

But as the rain has started to drop, it is hoped that Hilsas will be available in the rivers, he added.

The fishing has been effective in the sea, with fishers refraining from going to the sea, said Coast Gurd South Zone Commander Captain SM Moin Uddin.

Bhola District DoF Officer SM Azharul Islm said, this is the first time, monthly 40 kilogram of rice will be given to each 1,07,000 sea-going fishers out of total 1,32,000 registered ones in upazilas of the district including Charfasson Upazila.
