Almost all the main roads of the capital city Dhaka were waterlogged following prolonged torrential rain since early morning on Friday.

Several people were seen wading through knee-deep and at some places through waist-deep water to reach their destinations. Due to the water logging, several vehicles broke down on the roads, causing severe traffic congestion.

The rainwater also entered vehicles and CNG-run autorickshaws travelling along the main roads, leading to chocking of engine and subsequent breakdown, motorists said.

With 130mm of rainfall in six hours from 6:00am to 12:00pm on Friday, many roads in the capital remained inundated until writing of this report at 8:30pm.

Areas of the capital including Fakirapool, Nayapaltan, Baitul Mukarram, Shantinagar, Arambagh, Pragati Sarani, New Market, Bangshal, Dayaganj intersection, Sayedabad Bus terminal, Nimtali, Toynbee Circular Road, Elephant Road, , Karwan Bazar, Farmgate, Bijay Sarani, Mirpur Mazar Road, Indira Road and East Rajabazar, and Dhaka Gate VIP Road were inundated due to very heavy morning rain.

Many shops and ground floor of houses in these areas were submerged too.

As the rain drenched the city, several areas of Dhaka including Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Shewrapara, Kazipara, Mazar Road, Elephant Road, Matsya Bhaban, Central Road, Dhanmondi 27 and Karwan Bazar, were inundated by rainwater.

The capitals Shantinagar, Malibagh, Mouchak, Kakrail, Purana Paltan, Naya Paltan, Arambagh, Shahjahanpur, Fakirapul, Bijoynagar were also waterlogged due to the heavy rainfall.

In addition, the Dayaganj intersection, Sayedabad Bus Terminal, Nimtoli, Kamlapurs Toynbee Circular Road, and many other areas saw some flooding. As it was the weekend, there were few people on the streets.

However, those who still had work suffered as very few vehicles operated on the roads. The DMP Traffic Department has urged residents to set off with time on their hands while travelling during the rain.

Expressing resentment over the citys drainage system, a private job-holder said the city is turning into an unliveable city gradually as the low-lying areas usually get submerged after a light downpour. He urged the authorities concerned to take measures to address the issue immediately.

In Mohakhalis Dakkhin Para, the accumulated rainwater on the roads had made its way into the shop of a local shopkeeper Mahbubul Alam.

He said, "My shop is on the side of the road. I erected a flood barrier in front of my shop a few days back. But it didn help. Waist-deep water has made its way into my shop. All the goods are now wet and damaged due to the water."

"There is so much talk about development, yet water accumulates on the roads and makes its way into the houses after a light downpour. The suffering is endless." The rainwater also flooded the capitals Shantinagar market and its surrounding areas on Friday morning.

Ahamed Faysal Hossain, a rickshaw passenger going from Banglamotor to Gulistan, said, "The entire road from Kakrail intersection to Paltan intersection is flooded. Around 10 CNGs and motorcycles got stuck on the road due to engine problems." He added that water entered the shops on both the sides of the road.

A local butcher, Amin Mia, said, "A gentleman had said he would buy meat. But he isn here. The rainwater has made its way into the market.

According to the statistics of Bangladesh Meteorological Department, a total of 130mm rainfall occurred in the six hours from 6:00am to 12:00noon. "When the rainfall crosses 88 millimetres, we call it very heavy rain," said Tariful Newaz, a meteorologist of the BMD.

The commuters who mostly left home for their workplace to provide emergency services and to go to kitchen markets suffered on the roads due to the water logging and transport crisis.

According to a morning bulletin of the Meteorological Department, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram, Sylhet, Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna, and Barishal may experience gusty winds along with light to moderate rainfall in the 24 hours from 9:00am on Friday.

The bulletin also reported moderate to heavy rainfall may drench several other parts of the country. In the last 24 hours until 6:00am on Friday, Coxs Bazar recorded 309mm of rainfall, the highest in the country.

Noakhalis Sandwip, Rajshahi, and Kushtias Kumarkhali recorded 219mm, 135mm, and 111mm of rainfall respectively.
