A student of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia has filed a complaint against Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) IU unit joint secretary for assaulting him.
The incident reportedly happened at the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall on Monday morning.
The victim, Mahfuz-ul Haque, a resident of room no-420 and a fourth-year student in the university's Law department. The alleged perpetrator is Mehedi Hasan Hafiz, joint secretary of the IU BCL unit.
Mahfuz-ul Haque filed a written complaint with the university proctor, student adviser, and the hall provost.
According to the written complaint, ‘around 11:00 am on Monday, Sohanur Rahman, a student in the Arabic Language and Literature department from the same year, interrupted Mahfuz-ul Haque while he was studying and requested his presence at a BCL protest rally against the anti-quota movement. Later, a BCL leader, Hafiz, arrived and questioned him about his attendance at a quota reform rally the previous night. An argument ensued, allegedly resulting in Hafiz assaulting Mahfuz-ul Haque with a broom handle inside their dormitory room. Hafiz also reportedly threatened and ordered him to leave the hall immediately. Mahfuz-ul Haque expressed feelings of insecurity and demanded protection and justice from the university authorities.’
Mehedi Hasan Hafiz denied the allegations. ‘I am unaware of these accusations," Hafiz said. "He is making false complaints against me. If he files an official complaint, I will take legal action for defamation.’
‘Mahfuz-ul Haque has filed a written complaint with the proctor's office, said IU proctor Professor Dr Shahadat Hossain Azad. We will convene a meeting with all involved parties to reach a decision as soon as possible.’
