RAJSHAHI, July 24: About 6,000 people of 1,200 families of Chakrajapur Union in Bagha Upazila of the district have been destitute.

These people are dwellers of three wards of this union.

Two-thirds of few wards have already been eroded by the Padma River. But most of the victims did not raise new houses in other chars by purchasing places; and about 1,000 families have raised houses on rental places.

It was learnt, 20,000 people are living at entire Chakrajapur Union; and agriculture and fishing in river are their living sources.

In addition to houses, some of them had hundreds of bighas of agriculture lands in these chars.

At different times, their homes and lands were devoured by river; but most of them could not raise new houses by purchasing lands in other places; others raised living houses on rental places.

Chakrajapur Union in middle of the Padma River is detached from the main land, having 15 chars.

He said, he had 60 bighas of land; but now he is all lost due to erosion by the river.
At present, he is living with his family in rental place in other char.

Now he is passing his family having one son and one wife as a fisher. His two daughters have been married.

"After independence, I built my house in Kalidaskhali Char; due to erosion by the Padma River, I lost my home and land for several times; I changed my places for many times; but after my house breaking in 2016, I did not get place in char of Padma."

He further said, he has been living in Chakrajapur Char by taking rent of one bigha land; he and his one brother are living there at a monthly rent of Tk 20,000 per year.
